Supplementing missing parts
My extensive experience in this area ranges from simple to extremely complex repair work on books and bindings – some up to 300 years old. After the restoration of the “inner life” of the book, the binding is then repaired or recrafted using traditional bookbinding techniques, in order to recreate the original binding as authentically as possible.
Then as now, only ageing-resistant materials such as linen twine and acid-free glues are used in such restoration work. All elaborate bindings are bound in such a way as to be reversible. So, theoretically, the book could still be repaired and its original binding recreated by a bookbinder in a hundred years’ time.
